Human Race 2006
On Saturday May 13, a team of runners, walkers, and wheelchair riders will join
PSA at the Human Race 2006 in honor of Alex Kinder. Alex,13, is leading the PSA
Team at the race this year. Below, he shares his encounter with
stroke at age 5.
The Worst Stroke of Luck
It was a stormy day, and I was about 5 years old.
My mom and I went up to the house of my god
brother, to play and visit. When we got to his
house, I found out that Connor and I were going to
one of his friend's houses. At first I objected, then I
was just glad to be with my god brother, but little did
I know that this day would change my life forever. “
All right, honey, have a great time,“ called my mom.
“Bye Mom,” I replied. It was the last time I saw her
before it happened.

I started running around with the other kids, but then the rain started pouring from
the sky and I began to get a hollow feeling inside. It kept getting worse and worse
and it left me feeling lonely and sad. I stopped playing and went over into a
corner. I felt the worst feeling I have ever felt in my life, the feeling that the world
was going to end and that there's no point living anymore. I started to wail. It
seemed like the world was spinning around me.A friend of my god brother's mom
came up to me and asked,” What's wrong?” I muffled, “I don't know.” But
somewhere out there my mom was having a stroke.
My godfather arrived with a very grave look on his face. He took me back to his
house where my dad picked me up. I had no idea what was going on and I was
scared. My dad drove to Stanford Hospital and I went to the emergency room
where I found my mom lying in a bed with her eyes shut. It was one of the saddest
moments of my life.
Four months from that day my mom was released from the hospital. But the whole
left side of her body was paralyzed. She struggled to write with her other hand,
not to mention she also had to learn how to walk all over again. The one thing I
learned is that you should treat every day like it was your last with those that you
love. I'm glad that my mom is a stroke survivor, and I am too.
We hope that you support Alex and the PSA Team at the Human race 2006.
