STROKE IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY. CALL 911
What is a Stroke?
Simply, put, stroke is a brain attack. Stroke is caused by a clot that decreases blood flow and oxygen to the brain or
by a ruptured blood vessel ("bleed") that disrupts blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Both clots and bleeds result in
death/injury of brain cells. The damaged brain cells can cause paralysis, speech impairment, memory loss, and
more. The damage is progressive: the longer you wait for medical treatment, the more brain cells die and the greater
the disabilities. Doctors tell us, "Time equals brain".

Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S. Here is the good news -- approximately 80% of all
strokes can be prevented.
