Special Performance by Mezzo Soprano Jan Curtis
Jan Curtis is a nationally known opera singer whose roles included Sadie Burke in Willie
Stark (Houston Grand Opera, Kennedy Center Great Performances on PBS). Mum in Albert
Herring (St. Louis Opera, Atlanta Opera, Associate Artists), the Witch in Hansel and Gretel
(Opera Company of Boston) among others. Jan had a stroke in 1995 that left her aphasic.
She evidently still has difficulty speaking but she can certainly sing! After a solo performance
as part of the 2001 Fleet Celebrity Series in Boston, a commentator said "her distinctively
coppery, expressive voice still carries to the back row, still opens like a blossom at the top."
Among the numerous recognitions she has received after her stroke is the Annie Glenn
award, which recognizes outstanding achievement by individuals with communication
disorders. Jan graduated from the New England Conservatory. From the time she began
her career in Boston in the late 1960's, mezzo-soprano Jan Curtis was considered an artist
of deep communicative power, with a voice of dark lustrous beauty.
